Moving from TFS2005 to TFS2008

This weekend we made the move from TFS2005 to TFS2008 and it went pretty smooth.  The only issue we encountered was with Analysis Services wasn't happy about one of the attributes in the TFSWarehouse cube, but that wasn't really related to the upgrade process.  We resolved that and everything else went fine.

If your thinking of making the move here's some resources that will help you out in the process.

When you start the TFS2008 install you will find the updated installation guide, make sure to read the section on upgrading.  It includes some checks to be done and information you will need such as the user and password for the service accounts you used.

Depending on the size of your TFS databases allow some time for the upgrade to complete.  During the upgrade keep in mind it must go through and do database updates so this is more than just a software install.  While it has a progress bar, it won't give you an estimate (not that it would be accurate if it did! ) so best advice is don't sit there and watch it as you will think it's not doing anything!

We did ours late on Friday night so we would make sure to minimize impact on any of our developers, that way also if we encountered a problem we had some time to get it back up and running without impacting day to day stuff.

Most important  - Make sure you have a good backup!

So how long would you say the complete install takes?
