Branding your blog...

Executive Summary - If you bother to create a blog, you should make sure that you put your name in the title of your RSS/ATOM feed.  Further, if you blog about a specific product, make sure you update the version when the next one is released or you too will be passed up as the old version!

For the longest time now I have been using Outlook 2007 to read my RSS feeds and really enjoyed having them inside Outlook.  Some where around the end of November they just stopped updating....Not all of them just some of them - For a while I just thought it was the holidays and people bad nothing to say.  Then I noticed that things were still getting blogged and it was me that was not getting the updates.  I tried all kinds of stuff to revive the feeds in Outlook but gave up, it turned out at some point some of my feeds just vanished from my feed list - the folder was still there though.

That brings me to the post title, in recovering my feed list I realized by looking at the names of the feed names it was really hard to discover who's feed it actually was.  It made me realize that often times when I read the blogs I skip people who I would normally be interested in following more closely what they blog about.  Sure creative names are fun, but throw in a bit of reality and make it easy to know who you are.  My favorite were some of my CRM feeds which several had "Microsoft CRM 3.0 Blog" - now that CRM 4.0 is released guess there is some housekeeping to be done there...

So the bottom line, take a few minutes this holiday week and check out your blog title.  Nothing like starting the new year with a fresh title that makes easy for people to know who they are reading content from.

Too true! As a newbie blogger but long time blog and RSS Feed reader, I have experienced the same issues. I also find it a mission to get throught the millions of posts.

One nice solution is UniveRSS, it allows you to "fly through" blog space into the feeds that you may find interesting. Also one can create adhoc or saved search option within the "My UniveRSS" space.

Great app - but still needs correct headers for blogs and posts.
