ASP.NET AJAX Beta 1 - Here we go...
The rebranding of code name Atlas is taking real form in the release of Beta 1 of ASP.NET Ajax.
Scott G has a good detail post here and if you have current applications on Atlas there's a migration doc here.
Core vs Value Add - The core will be the fully supported 10 year 24/7 part including key pieces like script manager and Update panel while Value Add will be the parts that aren't quite as ready - I think that's great and show's the new focus on getting stuff out the door.
Key other things in the beta?
- Performance and Download Size -Lots of focus on the size of the bits downloaded to support the client - also changes to use the prototype based classes instead closure-based
- Safari Browser Support - They are also working on Opera - Better them than me! I have to admit the renewed focus on cros browser due to AJAX is a pain! Glad someone else is doing most of the work!
- Better Debugging Support - Yeah! Lots of stuff to make it work better with the debugger - But hey where's the improved tracing support?
- Update Panel Improvements - Update Panels Rock and simply put are your quickest way to using some AJAX on your site - This beta addresses some of the more complicated scenarios where Update Panel was falling short.
- Lots of Client Script Library Improvements
- Source Modification License - See my take on it here and please share your thoughts.
When's RTM you ask? Scott said in his post "Our plan is to release a beta refresh in a few weeks that incorporates customer feedback, then ship a RC release after that, and then ship it as a fully supported 1.0 release once people feel it is ready" My translation? That sounds pretty quick so if you want to get your 2 cents in download it and kick the tires now.
